As the leader of PL I'm sure he has issues to deal with that the rest of us never face because for us the game is just a game. At different points, EvE is a lot more than a game for the big Alliances, especially when they are at war.

So, while his rage seems like really bad leadership, no one else seemed to mind.

Those are pretty rare cases though. In general, pvp fleets are just a bunch of people having fun together. I'd be fairly certain that no one would fly with Grath if he wasn't a good leader normally.
